Why the Arts Might Be the Missing Piece in Your Wellness Plan (Yes, Even for Lawyers)

Most of us think of physical health as something built in the gym or on the trail. We count our steps, watch our macros, and maybe even schedule time for mindfulness or recovery. But there’s something else that’s been quietly boosting our health in ways we might not fully realize—the arts.

I’m talking about dance, painting, theater, music, storytelling. All the creative stuff that many of us gave up somewhere between law school and our third contract negotiation of the day.

CBS Sunday Morning recently aired a segment called “How the Arts Can Create Healthier Communities”, and it stopped me in my tracks. In the segment, Dr. Jon LaPook explained how engaging with the arts can actually help us heal from illness and even help prevent conditions like heart disease, anxiety, and depression. The piece also featured Broadway director Lear deBessonet, who’s behind a national movement called Arts For EveryBody, designed to use creativity as a public health tool.

And here’s where it gets really interesting for folks like us—people with high-pressure, high-performance jobs. Participating in or even just being around the arts has been linked to:

Lower cortisol levels (hello, stress relief)
Better brain function and memory retention
Improved cardiovascular health
More social connection, which is great for mental health
And even reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression

When you think about it, it makes sense. Our bodies want to move to music. Our brains light up when we see color, rhythm, and story.

Personally, I’ve always loved to draw and paint. I don’t do it often enough but when I do, I find it definitely helps me feel better. When I’m feeling overwhelmed, pulling out some paints or sketching even for 10 minutes helps me feel grounded again. It’s a reset button that has nothing to do with work or goals. Just joy. And it reminds me just how much I love doing it.

So if you’ve been feeling burned out, stiff, or just a little gray lately, maybe don’t start with another HIIT class or productivity hack. Maybe start with taking an art class. Listen to jazz or maybe go see a show at your local community theater.

Or go all-in and join a dance class!

What do you think about adding arts to your wellness toolbox? Have they already helped you stay grounded, connected, or calm? I’d love to hear how creativity plays a role in your health journey.
